A flash of turquoise or a loud call is often all you’ll see and hear of a Kingfisher. These elusive, brightly coloured birds are widespread throughout England and can be found near slow moving rivers or lakes. They fly low and rapidly, occasionally hovering over the surface of the water. Hunting from perches, they dive bomb the water hoping to skewer a fish with their sharply pointed beaks. Kingfishers are part of the Alcedinidae family and have the Latin name Alcedo atthis.
